Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviours to improve mental health and well-being. The goal of CBT is to help individuals recognise and modify unhelpful or irrational thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours that may be contributing to their psychological distress.
CBT is typically short-term and structured, with specific goals and techniques tailored to the individual's needs. The therapist works with the individual to identify the problematic thoughts and behaviours, and then helps them develop coping strategies and alternative ways of thinking and behaving.
CBT has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and more.
EMDR is a type of psychotherapy that is used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. EMDR therapy involves a structured approach to processing traumatic memories and reducing the distress associated with them.
During an EMDR therapy session, the client is asked to focus on a specific traumatic memory while following the therapist's instructions to move their eyes from side to side, either by tracking the therapist's hand movements or through other forms of bilateral stimulation such as sounds, taps or via a light bar. This process is believed to stimulate the brain's natural processing of memories, allowing the traumatic memory to be reprocessed in a less distressing way.
EMDR therapy is typically conducted over a series of sessions, with the number of sessions varying depending on the individual's needs and the severity of their symptoms. It has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression, and is often used in conjunction with other forms of therapy.
CFT stands for Compassion-Focused Therapy. It is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on developing compassion, both towards oneself and others, as a way to reduce suffering and improve mental health and well-being.
CFT draws from a range of psychological theories, including evolutionary psychology, attachment theory, and neuroscience, to understand the role of compassion in human psychology. The therapy aims to help individuals who may struggle with feelings of shame, self-criticism, and self-blame, and who may have difficulty showing kindness and understanding to themselves and others.
During CFT sessions, the therapist helps the individual to develop a compassionate mindset and encourages them to practice self-compassion in their daily lives. This may involve learning new skills, such as mindfulness or breathing exercises, and working to challenge negative self-talk and beliefs.
CFT has been shown to be effective in treating a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and trauma-related symptoms. It is often used in conjunction with other forms of therapy, such as CBT and EMDR, as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
